TapeTech vs Columbia vs Asgard: Which Automatic Taper to Buy

TapeTech vs Columbia vs Asgard: Which Automatic Taper to Buy

By Brandon Barker, Timothy's Toolbox

Brandon has sold professional taping tools since 2017.

You've decided a bazooka will pay for itself, and now you're stuck on the brand. Most of the TapeTech vs Columbia debate comes down to feel and the gear you already own, and the Asgard HAMMER has added a third option at a lower price. The short version: the TapeTech 07TT and the Columbia Automatic Taper (TAPER) cost about the same, while the HAMMER comes in about $330 less. Timothy's Toolbox is an authorized dealer for all three brands, so this guide is about fit for your crew, not about pushing one name.

Side-by-side comparison of TapeTech, Columbia and Asgard automatic drywall tapers, shown as product shots and in use on drywall joints.

Key Takeaways

  • The TapeTech 07TT and Columbia TAPER cost about the same at Timothy's Toolbox, so the choice comes down to design and the gear you already run.
  • The Asgard HAMMER is TapeTech's value line. It costs about $330 less than the 07TT and is part of the TapeTech service network, but it has no EasyClean.
  • TapeTech offers a 10-year limited warranty and Asgard a 5-year limited warranty, both if you register within 14 days. Columbia offers a 5-year limited warranty plus 90 days unconditional.
  • The HAMMER loads from TapeTech pumps and goosenecks, so it works as a second tube on a TapeTech crew.

The Short Answer

If you're already on TapeTech or Columbia gear, stay in that system: the 07TT and the Columbia TAPER are priced about the same, so feel and existing kit should decide it. If you want the lowest cost of entry, the Asgard HAMMER Automatic Taper gives you a TapeTech-family taper without EasyClean.

Who Makes Each Taper?

Two of these three tapers come from the same company, so it helps to know who services and backs each one.

TapeTech is the brand behind the original Bazooka and is based in Suwanee, Georgia. Its roots go back to 1939, when brothers Bob and Stan Ames built their first taping tool in Georgia and went on to develop the automatic taper contractors still call the Bazooka. For the backstory, read our history of the Bazooka, or see the full line on our TapeTech drywall tools page.

Asgard is TapeTech's value line. Asgard tools are part of the TapeTech service network, and Asgard and TapeTech share a customer service line. Browse our Asgard automatic taping tools.

Columbia Taping Tools is based in British Columbia, Canada, where it designs, machines and assembles its tools in-house, with over 90% of the components sourced from the U.S. Columbia sells only through authorized dealers, and if a tool has a problem, Columbia asks you to contact the dealer that sold it first. See our Columbia taping tools.

The Three Standard Tapers Compared

All three use stainless or hard-anodized parts in the drive and cutting areas, and those are the parts that sit in wet compound every day. Columbia's stainless side plates, creaser arms and cable drum offer a lifetime of corrosion resistance. Empty weights in the table are ours; a taper weighs much more once it's full of mud. The table compares the TapeTech EasyClean Automatic Taper (07TT), the Columbia Automatic Taper (TAPER) and the HAMMER.

TapeTech vs Columbia: Where They Differ

The 07TT and the Columbia TAPER cost about the same at Timothy's Toolbox, so price won't settle it. The choice comes down to design, the tools you already own, and how you prefer to clean and maintain a taper.

Feel and Cutting Action

Columbia builds the Columbia TAPER around a cable release system that eliminates drag, with a creaser lever that engages without adding pressure to the tape drive. Its patent-pending Pump Action Sleeve gives a smooth, clean cut. A pull ring on the hand grip helps on high joints, and the brake has a quick release for tape changes.

TapeTech takes a different route. The 07TT has an adjustable brake, so you can set the tension to your tape and your hands. Its control tube uses enclosed rollers to help keep your hand from getting pinched during cuts, and the hook on the spool keeper gives you somewhere to hang the tool between runs.

Cleanup and Maintenance

Clean the taper after every use. Wash it with a brush and water (or a hose), flush all compound from under the cover plate and the tape advance mechanism, then lightly oil the wear points with TapeTech Bazooka Oil or any light machine oil. The HAMMER gets the same daily cleaning.

That's why the cover matters. You open it every time you clean, and EasyClean is TapeTech's quarter-turn plate built for that daily job. The Columbia TAPER uses a Quick Release Cap instead. Our guide to cleaning your automatic taper walks through it.

About EasyClean: EasyClean is TapeTech's patented feature. The 07TT and 07TT-C have it. The Asgard HAMMER doesn't.

For lubricant, TapeTech Bazooka Oil works on Columbia tools, and so does silicone spray on the moving parts. Avoid WD-40-type lubricants.

Warranty and Service

TapeTech's warranty is the longest here: a Limited 10-Year Warranty if you register within 14 days of purchase, otherwise 1 year. Columbia repairs or replaces a taper with a manufacturing defect free for five years from purchase. The first 90 days are unconditional, except for blades and cables. Register on Columbia's warranty page with the online form; there's no registration deadline. A claim needs your invoice, and the warranty isn't transferable.

None of them covers wear parts, such as taper cables and pyramid blades. Installing non-TapeTech or non-Asgard parts, or repairs outside a TapeTech Authorized Service Center, voids those two. Claims start in different places: TapeTech and Asgard tools go through ProService or an Authorized Warranty Repair Center, and Columbia warranty claims start with your dealer.

How warranty claims work: All three are manufacturer warranties. Register your tool (and notify Columbia for Columbia tools), then work through the seller to get your claim confirmed and accepted. The manufacturer decides every claim.

07TT: pros and cons

+ Pros
  • Smooth, reliable cutting
  • Runs for years with routine blade, needle and cable upkeep
  • EasyClean quick-release cover plate and tool-free tube protector
  • Longest registered warranty here (10 years)
  • Strong parts and dealer support
  • Light carbon fiber version available
  • Fits existing TapeTech pumps, goosenecks and boxes
− Cons
  • Higher price, about $330 more than the HAMMER
  • Some finishers feel more drag in internal angles
  • Out-of-warranty service usually means sending the tool in
  • Non-carbon models feel heavier
  • 1-year warranty if not registered within 14 days
  • Non-TapeTech parts or unauthorized repairs void the warranty

Columbia TAPER: pros and cons

+ Pros
  • Responsive customer service
  • Adjustable clicker brake
  • Reduced-drag setups for corners
  • Quick-release tape change
  • Caps come off easily for cleaning
  • Easy to rebuild, with parts that are easy to get
  • Often costs less than a comparable TapeTech
  • 90-day unconditional warranty on top of the 5-year limited
  • Claims start with your dealer
− Cons
  • Shorter warranty than the 07TT
  • Can need break-in and tuning
  • Some report dry spots in the first few inches or lid and gasket leaks
  • The Predator carbon fiber model is heavier than TapeTech’s carbon fiber taper
  • Less interchangeable outside Columbia’s own system

What Contractors Say About TapeTech and Columbia Automatic Tapers

Specs only tell part of the story. Here's what we know about how these tapers hold up on the job.

TapeTech tapers have a reputation for running for years with routine repairs, and plenty of TapeTech owners call theirs faultless. The newer TapeTech carbon fiber taper is earning fans, but it doesn't have that long track record yet.

The carbon fiber models split opinion: some finishers love the lighter weight, others prefer the feel of the standard models. Brand loyalty runs both ways, too, and some Columbia Predator owners who have run TapeTech tapers weren't won over by them. Columbia's detachable-head taper is still new, so there's little firsthand track record on it yet.

Whatever brand you pick, expect a learning curve. Once a taper is running, it's fast, but tape jams happen while you're learning it. If you're buying used, check how the tool was cared for. A used taper that wasn't cleaned before storage is trouble.

The takeaway: compare the exact models you're considering on how they handle when loaded, tape advance, cutting, corners, cleaning access and servicing.

From the Shop: There’s no clear winner between TapeTech and Columbia tapers. Both handle production taping well. Which one fits your crew comes down to feel, weight, how evenly the taper lays mud, how easy it is to clean and rebuild, and how close you are to parts and service.

Many finishers find TapeTech runs and cuts a little smoother, and the carbon fiber 07TT-C weighs only about 5.65 lb empty. Columbia wins people over on customer service, value, easy rebuilds and reduced-drag setups that help in corners and internal angles.

Dry spots usually come down to technique, not the brand. Prime the taper fully, set the brake, and advance the wheels on the wall instead of by hand, and most dry-spot problems go away.

The biggest factors are what you’re already used to running, how close you are to parts and service (downtime costs more than small performance differences), and how the tool feels on your usual work, whether that’s mostly flats or lots of angles. If you can, run both side by side before you buy. Plenty of crews mix brands. Just make sure the tool you’re adding works with the setup you already have.

Asgard vs TapeTech: Is the HAMMER a Cheaper Bazooka?

Yes, in the sense that it comes from the same company: the HAMMER is TapeTech's value line and costs about $330 less than the 07TT. The documented trade-offs are no EasyClean and a 5-year warranty instead of 10.

The family link is real. The published parts diagrams for the HAMMER and the 07TT share most of their part numbers, including the filler valve. Not every part interchanges, so check before you order a replacement part. Asgard's gooseneck uses the same parts as TapeTech's 85T gooseneck, and the HAMMER loads from TapeTech pumps and goosenecks, such as the 76TT pump and 85T gooseneck. Asgard's pump and gooseneck work with all major brands.

Asgard's warranty follows TapeTech's terms, with the same 14-day registration and the same claim route, but covers 5 years instead of 10.

Is the Extra Cost of the 07TT Worth It?

Ask four questions:

  • How often will it run? A taper that runs every day gets cleaned every day, and that's the job EasyClean is aimed at.
  • How long will you keep it? The 07TT's registered warranty runs 10 years and the HAMMER's 5. Both drop to 1 year if you don't register within 14 days.
  • What do you already own? The HAMMER loads from TapeTech pumps and goosenecks, so a TapeTech crew doesn't need new loading gear.
  • Who will service it? Both go through the TapeTech service network and the same warranty claim route. Their parts diagrams share most part numbers, though not every part interchanges.

The HAMMER costs about $330 less. What you give up for that is EasyClean and five years of registered coverage.

HAMMER: pros and cons

+ Pros
  • About $330 less than the 07TT
  • TapeTech service network and claim route
  • Loads from TapeTech pumps and goosenecks
  • Hard-anodized drive parts and stainless push rod
− Cons
  • No EasyClean
  • Half the 07TT’s registered warranty (5 vs 10 years)
  • Not every part interchanges with the 07TT
  • Some Asgard tools run slightly heavier than TapeTech’s current models
  • Usually trails TapeTech by a generation when a new feature comes out

Purchase Price vs Ownership Cost

The sticker price is only part of what a taper costs. Weigh cleanup, wear parts, repairs and time without the tool too.

Cleanup. Every maker tells you to clean the tool after each use, so the cover design is a daily cost in time, not a one-time feature.

Wear parts. Cables and blades wear with use. TapeTech's and Asgard's warranties don't cover them, and Columbia excludes wear parts too, so budget for them on any brand.

Repairs and downtime. Loss of use while a tool is at the repair center isn't covered, so plan for time without the tool. TapeTech's ProService handles out-of-warranty repairs, and TapeTech covers the replaced parts for 1 year. Start Columbia warranty claims with your dealer. We stock parts for all three brands. An online parts section is coming soon; until then, contact us to order.

Warranty. On TapeTech and Asgard tools, registering within 14 days is what turns 1 year of coverage into 10 or 5.

Which Automatic Taper Should You Buy?

The best automatic taper is the one that fits your crew's existing tools and budget.

  • Buying a first full taper or on a budget: Asgard HAMMER. It's the lowest price of the three and part of the TapeTech service network.
  • Adding a second tube to a TapeTech crew: Asgard HAMMER. It loads from your TapeTech pump and gooseneck.
  • Already running TapeTech boxes and pumps: TapeTech 07TT. You stay on one system and get EasyClean.
  • Partial to Columbia's controls or running Columbia tools: Columbia TAPER, with the cable release and Pump Action Sleeve.
  • Working tight rooms, closets and remodels: a 39" Columbia mini taper (see below).
  • Taping lots of high ceilings: TapeTech 07TT with the ATX01TT extension (see below).
  • Want lighter weight or the carbon look: the 07TT-C or Columbia Predator (see below).
  • Not ready for a $1,200+ taper: the Columbia Semi-Automatic bucket taper or a banjo is a low-cost step up.

Carbon Fiber and Mini Tapers

The TapeTech Carbon Fiber EasyClean Automatic Taper (07TT-C) keeps EasyClean with carbon fiber tubes and weighs about 5.65 lb. The Columbia Predator Carbon Fiber Automatic Taper is 53" long with a titanium pull rod and weighs about 6.5–7.2 lb empty. Expect to pay about $180 more than the standard models.

For tight rooms, the Columbia Sawed Off and Predator Sawed Off mini tapers are 39" long, compared with 53" for a regular taper.

Going the other way, the TapeTech ATX01TT extension adds 30" to a 07TT and reaches joints up to 3.6 m (about 11.8 ft).

Pair Your Taper With the Right Pump and Gooseneck

Every taper needs a loading pump and a gooseneck, and staying in-brand keeps parts familiar. We stock loading pumps, goosenecks and flat boxes for all three brands.

Columbia makes excellent tools, but they aren’t always the most interchangeable option unless you’re working within Columbia’s system. You can always reach out to Columbia with questions about modifications, parts, or whether new products work with old accessories. For the taper, though, most mud pumps will work with any brand as long as you have the right filling attachment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who makes Asgard taping tools?
TapeTech does. Asgard is TapeTech's value line, and Asgard tools are part of the TapeTech service network. That means parts and service run through the same company that makes the 07TT.
Are Asgard and TapeTech parts the same?
They're closely related, but not every part swaps. The published parts diagrams for the HAMMER and 07TT share most of their part numbers, Asgard's gooseneck uses the same parts as TapeTech's 85T, and the HAMMER loads from TapeTech pumps. We stock parts for all three brands. An online parts section is coming soon; until then, contact us to order.
What is the best automatic taper?
It depends on the tools your crew already runs and how you clean. Use the buying list above to match your situation to the HAMMER, 07TT or Columbia TAPER.
Can I use Bazooka Oil on Columbia tools?
Yes, you can use TapeTech Bazooka Oil on Columbia tools. Silicone spray on the moving parts works too. Avoid WD-40-type lubricants.
What size tape does an automatic taper use?
TapeTech tapers and the Asgard HAMMER take 2-1/16" to 2-1/8" tape. The HAMMER takes paper tape. TapeTech tapers take paper or fiber tape on 250' or 500' rolls, with no mesh.
Why is there no mud behind my tape?
The usual causes are an unprimed pump, a low bucket, or drive wheels losing contact with the wall.
Do I have to register my taper for the warranty?
For TapeTech and Asgard, yes: register within 14 days, or coverage drops to 1 year. For Columbia tools, notify Columbia. The manufacturer decides every claim.
