5 Tips for Choosing a Hard Hat for Drywall Work

If you do drywall work, you know a hard hat isn’t just something you throw on and forget about. You wear it for hours, you move in and out of tight spots, and you feel every bad choice by the end of the day. Choosing a hard hat for drywall work starts with knowing what actually holds up on site and what just looks good on the shelf.

Check The Safety Rating First

Before you get into fit, comfort, or style, look at the safety rating. That tells you what kind of protection the hard hat is built to provide on the job. Most hard hats are tested under ANSI Z89.1. ANSI is the safety standard used to rate hard hats for impact and electrical protection, so this is the label you want to find before anything else.

Consider the Impact Type

You’ll also see two main impact types: Type I and Type II. Type I hard hats protect from impacts to the top of the head. Type II hard hats protect from top impacts and side impacts. Look at the Class Rating

You’ll also see a class rating. Class G is for general use and gives limited electrical protection. Class E gives a higher level of electrical protection. Class C does not provide electrical protection at all. So even if two hard hats look almost the same, the rating can tell you they’re built for very different job site conditions.

Make Sure The Fit Stays Secure

A hard hat can have the right rating and still be a bad pick if it doesn’t stay in place. Drywall work keeps you moving, bending, reaching, and looking up for long stretches. If the fit shifts every time you move, it’s going to get old in a hurry. Look for an adjustable suspension system with a secure fit around the head, so the hard hat stays put through a full day of work.

Pay Attention to Weight

For drywall work, a good hard hat weight is generally around 14 to 18 ounces. Once you get much above that, you’re more likely to feel it in your neck and shoulders by the end of the day, especially if you’re looking up a lot or wearing it the whole shift.
